Introducing The Latest Arch Linux ISO Release: Kernel 6.8 and an Updated Installer

Deluxe company -

For those of you who want to install Arch Linux, there’s a new official ISO snapshot available for download powered by Linux kernel 6.8 and featuring an improved installation experience.

The Arch Linux developers found themselves needing to release the ISO snapshot for April 2024 ahead of time due to the backdoor found in the XZ Utils package, an issue which impacted the Arch Linux 2024.03.01 ISO image, as well as virtual machine images and container images that were available for download on the distribution’s website.

The backdoor in Arch Linux was discovered in XZ package versions 5.6.0-1 and 5.6.1-1. Fortunately, the Arch Linux developers rapidly rectified this by releasing XZ version 5.6.1-2, inclusive in the new ISO image, Arch Linux 2024.03.29. Detailed information about this incident can be found here.

What sets the Arch Linux 2024.03.29 ISO image apart is not only the patched XZ package, but it’s also the first ISO to provide the newest Linux 6.8 kernel series. This introduces improved hardware support, particularly valuable for those who wish to deploy Arch Linux on more recent hardware. The ISO comes with Linux kernel 6.8.2 by default.

Moreover, the April 2024 ISO release of Arch Linux features an upgraded archinstall menu-based installer, tagged as 2.7.2, enhancing the support for unified kernel images (UKI), limiting the UKI to the approved options and resolving the default value issue in the UKI.

The release of archinstall 2.7.2 also introduces the --skip-ntp instruction to the documentation, supersedes the plasma-wayland-session with plasma-workspace during the installation of Arch Linux with KDE Plasma desktop setting, extends support for Lithuanian translation, and refreshes the Italian locale.

Arch Linux 2024.03.29 can be downloaded from the official website. Naturally, this is intended for new deployments since existing Arch Linux users just need to keep their system updated by executing the sudo pacman -Syu command in their preferred terminal emulator.
