The UBports Foundation announced a plan to switch to a fixed-release model for future Over-the-Air (OTA) updates for Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system.
Precisely, a year ago, UBports Foundation launched the first Ubuntu Touch OTA update by utilizing the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as a base, which replaced the older Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) series base.
Though this shift returned multiple benefits for the Ubuntu Touch users, it also introduced various issues. These issues included not being able to release individual fixes for bugs or security problems without implementing all the other modifications made to their code base. Furthermore, they also had to freeze the development whenever a new OTA was rolled out.
The UBports Foundation have proposed a solution to these problems caused by the repositioning from Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 20.04. The proposed solution is a plan to change to a fixed-release model when migrating Ubuntu Touch to the impending Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) release.
This change won’t affect Ubuntu Touch users in any way. Actually, transitioning to a fixed-release model will enable UBports Foundation to deliver bug and security fixes quicker than before for a more stable and reliable Ubuntu Touch experience.
The upcoming Ubuntu Touch release model will follow the <year>.<month>.<minor> format, where the <year> and <month> version strings will be numbered corresponding to the expected year and month of the specific release, while the <minor> version string will initiate from 0 (such as 24.6.0) with minor releases augmenting it by 1.
The UBports Foundation has also mentioned their plan to roll out a major feature update of Ubuntu Touch biannually and minor releases every two months. They further stated that each major feature update will have support for approximately a month after the next major feature update is released.
