The developers of the Tails security-centric GNU/Linux distribution, which is Debian-based and prioritizes internet privacy and anonymity, have initiated a call for testing for the subsequent major release, Tails 6.0, founded on Debian Bookworm.

Currently, Tails 5 series operates on Debian GNU/Linux 11 “Bullseye”, indicating that it was about time for this distinguished security and privacy-focused distro to be updated to the latest Debian operating system series, Debian GNU/Linux 12 “Bookworm”. This also involves a modern GNOME desktop environment, GNOME 43.

Besides being founded on Debian Bookworm, Tails 6.0 is going to integrate several new features like safeguarding against harmful USB devices due to a new feature that dismisses any USB device connected to your machine whilst the screen is locked. New USB devices are only applicable when the screen is unlocked.

The Tails 6.0 is also anticipated to introduce a new feature which allows automatic mounting of external devices, in addition to the capability to prompt users to unlock the storage device if it consists of an encrypted partition.

With the transition to the GNOME 43 desktop series, Tails 6.0 is set to enhance user experience with new features such as dark mode, Night Light, and improved screenshot and screencast tools inherent to GNOME.

In addition, Tails 6.0 introduces an upgrade to the Persistent Storage feature, capable of generating suggested passphrases in multiple languages including Catalan, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. An updated version of the Mozilla Thunderbird email client simplifies the setup process for Gmail accounts.

It is also essential to note that most software in Tails 6.0 will be updated to the latest versions from the Debian Bookworm repositories. As previously mentioned, the Tails development team aims to officially unveil Tails 6.0 on February 27th, 2024.

In the meantime, those interested can sample the first developmental version of Tails 6.0 by downloading the ISO or USB images from the release announcement page. Please remember, however, that this version is still in its pre-release stage and should not be used in any production environment.
