I’ve been working for ColoCrossing for a little over a year now, and I have to say, it’s a great place to work. I’ve always worked hard – but I’ve never felt like I owned my work. Let me clarify that: in previous positions, I went to work and did my job to the best of my ability. I’ve always been the type to take work home with me. It’s just who I am. There are people who praise me for it, and there are people to tell me to leave it at the office.
I am who I am, I like what I do, and if I didn’t like what I do, I wouldn’t do it. Yikes. That’s a heck of a sentence.
Something feels different this time around, though. I feel connected to my work. Maybe it’s my age. Maybe it’s the fact that we’re an amazing but small company that’s growing with an amazing but small city.
Or maybe it’s our boss.
Jon Biloh is a lot of things. He’s a leader, he’s a man of passion, he’s a man of reason.
He didn’t ask me to write this, by the way. And you’ll see that I’m telling the truth in just a second.
Jon is, how can I say this without getting in trouble? Jon is…particular. He likes things a certain way – and that way is neat and tidy.
Everything from the boardroom to the breakroom – datacenter to the basement – is tidy. We even have branded coasters at every desk and available for our pristine conference room table.
Just the other day there was a guy in the office and everyone was wondering who he was and what he was doing here. As it turns out, he was here to paint the generator room. This is a room that’s basically a shipping container that’s out behind our building. It doesn’t face a street really, and if you didn’t know to associate it with ColoCrossing, you’d have no idea it was ours. There was almost no reason to spend the money on painting it. It looked fine the way it was. A little rust here and there, but ultimately, painting it didn’t even occur to me. To Jon, it needed to be done. I could tell he actually felt a little bad that he hadn’t gotten around to having it done sooner.
I have to admit, it really does look great.
This is a small example of how obsessed Jon is with keeping our office, datacenter, and yes, even generator as clean and tidy as possible.
But why am I telling you this?
I’m bringing this up because I think there’s a serious client benefit here. Having a datacenter partner that’s this concerned with organization and neatness benefits each and every client of ours. Yes, maybe the generator being nicely painted doesn’t do much – but it’s this obsession with neatness that ensures that any colocated hardware is treated as our own, the machines that get rented are in tip top shape, and the overall organization of our datacenter enables technicians to work quickly and efficiently.
Above is one of our technicians, Zack, working in our neatly organized network cage. By ensuring that everything is in its place we’re ensuring that any work done to your machines or network can be accomplished in as effiently as possible – saving you time and money.
Here’s a nice example of how neatly organized we like to keep everything. This is the norm, not an exception in our datacenter.
Even areas that can’t be seen without a ladder (or being 7 feet tall) are kept clean and organized so that we can work quickly when needed.
So, in the end, can you say for certain that your onsite datacenter or computer room look as organized as this? Or if you use another datacenter – have you seen it, up close and personal?
If you’d like to see our facility for yourself, you can always take our virtual tour, or schedule a time to come down and see it in person.
