A few weeks back, Microsoft rolled out its standard monthly patch update, addressing over 100 security flaws, including a vulnerability that was already being exploited. However, users have reported significant issues post-update, particularly concerning the recovery and reset functionalities of Windows. In response, Microsoft has issued an out-of-band (OOB) update, designated as KB5066189, to rectify these problems and has urged affected users to install the update promptly.
Many users found that they were unable to perform crucial tasks, such as resetting their PC through the System > Recovery > Reset my PC option, which is typically used to enhance system performance. Instead, the process would fail and revert the system to its prior state.
Another problematic scenario involved users attempting to resolve issues using the Windows Update feature, which was also inaccessible due to the complications introduced by the recent update.
Moreover, IT professionals faced challenges when trying to wipe devices remotely, a necessary procedure in cases of lost or stolen computers containing sensitive data.
To apply the latest OOB update, users should navigate to the Settings app, select Windows Update, and click on “Check for Update.” It’s important to note that while Microsoft follows a regular update schedule, emergency fixes—like the recent OOB update—are occasionally necessary to address widespread issues stemming from previous updates.
In addition to this, just last week, Microsoft released another emergency out-of-band fix to tackle installation issues with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Affected users can find a list of impacted updates on Microsoft’s website.
