Microsoft Acknowledges UAC Changes in KB5063878 Impacting App Installations on Windows 10 & 11

Microsoft’s August 2025 security update, known as KB5063878, has introduced a significant change to User Account Control (UAC) behavior during Windows Installer (MSI) repair operations. This update requires administrator credentials for any MSI repair tasks, addressing a vulnerability identified as CVE-2025-50173.

Due to these changes, standard users may now face UAC prompts while executing MSI repair commands, launching certain Autodesk applications like AutoCAD or Civil 3D, and installing self-configuring applications. Specifically, users attempting to install Office Professional Plus 2010 may encounter Error 1730 if a repair is initiated without a UAC prompt.

Microsoft advises users to run applications as an administrator when feasible. IT administrators who are unable to provide admin rights can implement a special Group Policy via Known Issue Rollback (KIR) to address the matter across supported platforms, including Windows Server 2025, Windows Server 2022, Windows 11 (22H2, 23H2, 24H2), and Windows 10 (21H2, 22H2). Temporary workarounds, such as disabling UAC or other security measures, are discouraged.

The company is working on a long-term resolution, promising future updates that will allow IT administrators to enable specific applications to perform MSI repairs without triggering UAC prompts, thereby balancing usability with security concerns.

In addition to the UAC changes, users have reported issues related to SSD failures and streaming problems following the update. However, Microsoft has clarified that these hardware issues are not linked to KB5063878, with SSD manufacturer Phison stating that they could not replicate the SSD failure issues after the update was installed.
