Microsoft is planning to enhance Windows 11 by introducing a new “Advanced Settings” page, which may replace the existing ‘For Developers’ section. This shift aims to incorporate features that will benefit a wider range of users, not just developers. A recent Windows Server build showcases this new page, which will potentially allow users to enable the “long path” option in File Explorer, among other features.
Currently, the ‘For Developers’ page targets developers, but it houses features that everyday users would find beneficial, such as the previously discussed “end task” feature for the taskbar. The new Advanced Settings page will include a toggle for a “long path” feature, which addresses the existing limitation on file path lengths imposed by Windows. By default, Windows restricts file paths to 260 characters, which can lead to issues when trying to manage files across different partitions, resulting in errors like “Path too long.”
As highlighted by users on platforms like X, this upcoming toggle will remove the 260-character limit on common Win32 file and directory functions, thus offering greater flexibility when dealing with file paths.
The Advanced Settings page will also introduce management tools for ‘Virtual Workspaces’, which create isolated environments on your PC. This change aims to streamline the management of virtualization features, making it easier for users to operate virtual machines and containers safely from the Settings menu.
Although the new Advanced Settings page is currently specific to Windows Server, there is a strong possibility that it will eventually be available to all Windows 11 users. The official rollout is anticipated in the upcoming months, particularly with the release of Windows 11 24H2.
