After a month of anticipation, users of Ubuntu 24.10 (Oracular Oriole) can now upgrade to the latest release, Ubuntu 25.04 (Plucky Puffin). This upgrade comes after the release of Ubuntu 24.10 on October 10, 2024, which is scheduled for support until July 2025. Since 24.10 is not a Long Term Support (LTS) release, upgrading to 25.04 is advisable for users looking to benefit from the latest features and enhancements.
Ubuntu 25.04 introduces several improvements over its predecessor, including a newer kernel (Linux 6.14) for enhanced hardware support, the Mesa 25 graphics stack for improved gaming performance, and the updated GNOME 48 desktop environment, along with other recent technologies.
To initiate the upgrade process, ensure your current installation of Ubuntu 24.10 is up to date and back up your important files to prevent any loss during the update. Once ready, users will receive a notification when they reboot their system indicating that Ubuntu 25.04 is available for upgrade. If this notification is missed, the upgrade can also be started manually through the Software Updater app or by running the command update-manager -c in the Terminal.
Upon launching the Software Updater, users will see a notification prompting them to click the “Upgrade” button. This will lead to more information about the upgrade process, after which they can confirm by clicking “Upgrade” again.
Before the actual upgrade starts, users will be informed about which packages will be upgraded, installed, or removed, and warned that any third-party repositories will be disabled during this process. Once the upgrade begins, it may take some time, so users are encouraged to relax with a cup of coffee.
After all packages are installed, users will be prompted to remove obsolete packages and then will need to restart their computer to complete the upgrade process. Once the system reboots, users can start using the new features that come with Ubuntu 25.04.
