Microsoft has issued an emergency update for Windows Server 2022 to resolve a significant issue causing Hyper-V virtual machines to freeze or restart unexpectedly. This problem primarily affects Azure confidential VMs, which are specifically designed to secure data during processing. The freezing occurs due to the way the operating system manages memory paths using guest physical addresses, potentially leading to VM lockups or random reboots.
To address this, Microsoft released KB5061906 as an out-of-band update, which supersedes all prior patches and focuses on a specific issue in the Hyper-V direct send path. While the update is mainly crucial for Azure confidential VMs, it may not impact standard setups unless operating in preview builds or test environments.
Notably, users need to manually install this update, as it will not automatically appear via Windows Update. Those experiencing issues will need to download the standalone MSU package from the Microsoft Update Catalog. If you haven’t already deployed the May 2025 Patch Tuesday update (KB5058385) and your systems are running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2022, you should apply this latest fix. However, there’s no requirement to install it if your systems are functioning normally.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has dealt with Hyper-V challenges. Over the past two years, several emergency patches have been necessary to correct issues related to broken container launches, boot failures, and VM startup errors in both Windows Server 2019 and 2022.
