MXLinux 25 is set to bring a range of improvements aimed at enhancing user experience. One of the major changes includes making Wayland the default option for KDE’s Plasma desktop, a move that aligns with the increased stability seen in this combination. For users who prefer the traditional X11, sessions will still be available as a backup, though the experimental Wayland session is turned off for the Xfce version, and Fluxbox does not support Wayland at all.
A noteworthy update is the introduction of two separate ISO images for installation: one featuring systemd and another with SysVinit. This allows users to select the init system that best suits their needs based on their chosen desktop environment. If users opt for Xfce, Fluxbox, or Plasma, they will receive systemd by default, with the option to select SysVinit specifically for Xfce and Fluxbox to ensure compatibility across environments. This shift marks a significant departure from MXLinux’s previous stance of being “mostly systemd-free.”
In addition, MXLinux 25 will provide basic Secure Boot support during installation, but this feature is constrained to standard releases utilizing Debian’s signed kernels on 64-bit UEFI systems. As Debian phases out 32-bit support, MXLinux will follow suit in this update.
