Debian 13 has officially been released after two years of development, bringing a host of under-the-hood improvements. This new version, dubbed “trixie,” is now available for download and installation, and as always, the wait has proven worthwhile.
Debian 13 showcases the Linux kernel 6.12 LTS, GNOME 48, GCC 12.2, OpenJDK Java 21, Python 3.13, UEFI and U-Boot HTTP boot support, an improved installer, RISC-V 64 architecture support, APT 3.0, and a new default theme. While it may not seem like a significant leap at first glance, users will notice its enhanced performance.
One of the standout features is the change in the /tmp directory to use tmpfs as the default storage location, meaning temporary files are saved in RAM rather than on local disks. Files in the /tmp directory will be automatically deleted after 10 days of inactivity, with /var/tmp cleaned after 30 days to prevent clutter and improve efficiency.
All supported desktop environments have also received updates, including GNOME 48, KDE Plasma 6.3, Xfce 4.20, LXDE 13, and LXQt 2.1.0.
Additionally, some notable changes involve the removal of MIPS support, a reduction of i386 support to a legacy status, the removal of elevated privileges for the ping command, and a shift to 64-bit time on 32-bit systems to mitigate the Y2K38 bug.
