The development team of the autonomously developed KaOS Linux distribution has started 2024 with a fresh ISO release, showcasing the first fully Plasma 6-based interface for users to experiment ahead of the highly anticipated KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment’s debut later this month.

The long-awaited KDE Plasma 6 is on the horizon, and we can look forward to experiencing its novel features and enhancements starting from February 28th, 2024. Nonetheless, the KaOS Linux developers are one step ahead, incorporating their Arch Linux-inspired distro and rolling out a new ISO that runs the second Release Candidate (RC) version of Plasma 6, Frameworks 6, and KDE Gear 24.02.
Although Plasma 6 is scheduled for release on February 28th, it will take some time for most continuous-release distributions like Arch Linux or openSUSE Tumbleweed to package it and distribute the substantial update to users. However, if you are impatient to wait, you have the option to download and install KaOS Linux 2024.01 at this moment and proceed with updating your installation until February 28th, to be amongst the first to operate KDE Plasma 6.
Plasma 6 may not be compatible with all your favorite apps, but don’t worry, KaOS Linux comes with KDE Frameworks 5 to facilitate its use. However, it is noted by the developers that apps dependent on select parts of KDE Plasma 5 may not be accessible on KaOS repos until they are successfully ported and prepared for routine usage.
At its core, the KaOS Linux 2024.01 version operates on the long-termed Linux 6.6 LTS kernel series. It also features updated components such as FFmpeg 6, Boost 1.83.0/ICU 74.1 stack, LLVM/Clang 17.0.6, systemd 254.9, Python 3.10.13, Util-Linux 2.39.3, IWD 2.13, MariaDB 11, and Postgresql 16.
